as we reach our 30th release on the label, animal farm is proud to present stephanie sykes’ first solo ep since 2016’s effort on prodigal son. those two years have seen her presence in the techno scene explode, with a flurry of appearances across europe - our own animal farm night in glasgow among them + residencies at tbilisi’s khidi and the infamous after hours jaded crew in london, corsica studios.

yuri shulgin is a multi-instrumentalist music producer from tajikistan. his discography includes a small number of releases from the greek label modernista and the french escapade recordings. animal planet is his contribution on cocktail d amore music. this ep is a live-recorded masterpiece that will lift dance floors into heavenly heights. a1 takes the record title. it s an acid based, genre-blurring piece of music, enveloping and disorienting at the same time. infinite strings melt together to a constant build up, reminiscent of steve reich - double sextet/2x5. boogie space feels like the continuation of the previous track, evoking a cloud of glitter in absence of gravity. walking starts off the b side. its funk future jazz-influenced groove is supported by an organic, as bouncy as timeless bassline. while the stripped down dubby body goes to deep realms, the outro recordtake closes this surreal ep.

transmitting treacherous local energy into his new creative undertakings, bogdan now joins the not an animal force keeping the flame well and truly ignited. a parovoznikov fires across all cylinders with a vigorous italo-arp bass motor, driving it further down the cosmic highway, engine doused in fully-lubricated synth-pad oil. justin van der volgen s remix swiftly rips the wing mirror clean off with a zealous two-to-the-floor-hitting blowout. on the b, listopad cruises top down with a more balearic approach. a dreamy square bass glissades alongside percussive hats and succulent pads that shuffle within the horizon, whilst computer bleeps chomp and add an intensifying clarity. kito jempere s remix closes the release with his first contribution to the label. it lifts up the original and drives towards sundown into moonlight. warping bass tones squelch against fetching stabs and brash breaks keeping this track fully pulsating.

ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco) return to not an animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. the duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on -secret place. the original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. on remix detail kuniyuki takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. on the vinyl you ll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era beatles. angaphora make their naar debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

new to the naar stable, in:state & giuli make their debut in stunning style.visitoz is a straight forward techno affair, as bumping as it is surprising. using a deceptively simple gated arp and horn to dazzlingly complex effect. the track is potentially the most peak time naar has gone yet, and it s an incredibly welcome addition to their canon. on remix duty lauer takes a hold of the main arpeggio and turns it monstrous in the style of liasions dangeruese, yet balances this with his trademark lightness of touch and his ear for a heart wrenching synth line, creating an instant classic that feels like it was beamed straight in from 1986. -plus 1- has been sent from a parallel dimension where the evolution of music took a turn so different that proto garage stands where proto house should be. the track has the step and swagger of the most compelling end of the 2 step movement, but balances that with the surprising naivete and earnestness found in italo, ebm and early forays from chicago. finishing things off, lizards return to the label for a welcome encore following last years success with their 1st release,tanni.

man power has proven on many occasions to be adept at all manner of different moods within the hardware house canon, but on this occasion hes particularly focusing on creating an exotic feeling out of mechanical means. tropical bastard is a fitting title for this project for not an animal records, with the original steeped in driving patterns of rhythm and melody that approximate a flavour of far flung lands while mutating the feeling into something more club-minded. lord of the isles goes one step further with a remix that ramps the modulation up to devilishly wonky levels. tropical bastard 2inch is an entirely different beast that plays on a cinematic vision of tropical escape, but with an acid thread pulsing through it. then the frank butters remix finishes the ep off with a more submerged, but equally mischievous take.

ian blevins has been busy making a name for himself on esp institute and futureboogie, but now he comes to not an animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. -the birds- is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there s some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. man power then step up with a -tropical bastard- remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. -locate yourself- on the flip finds blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it s a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he s known for.

not an animal records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the london-based party bad passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of man power, ess o ess and eric duncan to release on the label. now they turn to james hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on to rack & ruin and me me me. on this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. literate is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can t get enough of, while buried answers takes a skippier but no less moody approach. on the remix front, jamie blanco takes the prize, turning buried answers- into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

we are happy to have pan/tone for our fourth pfand release. sheldon thompson, aka sid le rock, serves up three melodic pieces which catapult you into a deep dreamy trip, complete with floating hypnotic grooves and melodies. rhodes avenue comes with tropical bells, 70 s-style rhodes piano with 80 s-synth flavour. animal parade convinces with cinematic soundscapes and a memorable hymn which brings us to another level. inyourendo surprises with electronic soundscapes which fit excellently for intros, interludes or ending of a set. and finally, the pfand team, hali and yapacc as -the cabin- adds a rework of animal parade with a percussive techno groove supported by a groovy bassline with deep drones that move directly into your brain

ess o ess are back home on not an animal, with a track that both continues and develops their recognisable motif. flamingoes and wombles and the blue oyster cult is as maniacal as the name may suggest, swamp rock, cosmic disco, techno and shamanistic vocals all play a part in a pleasingly out there confluence of styles that drives, spits and builds to an unhinged, but cohesive, finale.

for his first outing on naar, eric duncan presents us with shut it, a full bore techno-disco work out, complimented by an altogether more cosmic yet tribal remix from living legend daniel baldelli, alongside production partner marco dionig. on the b side you will find zona de perigo, which is a compelling mongrel affair showcasing a drug chug rhythm with a new age feel, and melodies that border on the anatolian, before breaking in to a satisfyingly arpeggiated conclusion.

jonny nash remix! not an animal keeps up the pace and pressure with yet another high quality distinctive release, further cementing the labels specific sound and revealing more of the scope of its musical mission. machete savane are compromised of label co owner andy bainbridge and producer/composer saul richards. manticore continues with their instantly recognisable hi octane yet organic discofied sound, as previously displayed via their releases on cynic and redux. remix wise, there s a very much night and day choice to be had here, with johnny nash (land of light) providing his trademark blissed-out ambience to a beatless rendition and ian blevins taking the original even further into dancefloor territory, upping the tempos and evoking the drive of paperclip people.

lizards are lee forster (1/3 last waltz) and james hadfield (the mainstay of the elizabeth collective). taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. it s one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable international track lives up to it s name, seeing the north eastern english producers channel the japanese take on the balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as cosmes.

not an animal return with their 2nd installment, this time from ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco). their original offering, cantillate, isn t an easy beast to identify, being equal parts swamp-rock and techno. imagine you ve stumbled across an ephedrine and moonshine fueled rave in a deep louisiana bayoux in the year 3000, and you re close. add an out-there vocal refrain, and you ll start to appreciate why this is a particularly distinct record. relocate said rave to a some kind of space ship hitting hyperspace, with photon torpedoes fully armed, and you ll suddenly find yourself with the first remix, as created by ene records owner chida.
